“The volume of detected faked goods in the EEU increased by 33% in 2021 and amounted to about 18.2 million units. At the same time the decreasing level of faked goods in the EEU as a whole turned to increase in 2021 due to removal of restrictions caused by the pandemic”, Mr. Sagintayev said during a meeting of the advisory committee on intellectual property on Monday during consideration of EEU annual report related to law enforcement practice in the field of protection of intellectual property rights in the EEU in 2021.

It is noted that 91.5% of violations in the field of intellectual property in the EEU relate to violations in the illegal use of trademarks.

The participants of the advisory committee meeting also discussed the possibility of applying the compulsory licensing procedure.

“This procedure is required especially in the context of the need to provide medicines to the population of our countries, in particular against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic”, underlined Mr. Sagintayev.

In addition the advisory committee discussed issues of implementation of the Treaty on Trademarks, Service Marks and Appellations of Origin of Goods of the EEU dated February 3, 2020 and search services allowing searching online for information on industrial property objects protected in the EEU.

“In view of the different approaches to taking into account the results of measures taken to identify faked goods in the EEU countries, the meeting also discussed the necessity to prepare relevant methodology”.
