On December 6, 2021 an orientation lecture was held for the students of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The lecture was given by Yuri Bolotov, Managing Partner of Bolotov & Partners.
During the lecture, in addition to general issues related to intellectual property, the topic of intangible assets was highlighted. Yuri Bolotov emphasized that intellectual property is an intangible asset (IA), the property of companies. For example, in the U.S. the share of IA is over 80%, in the EU us about 75%, in Japan is 65-70%, in China (as of 2009) is – 73%. In Kazakhstan, according to Yuri, the share of intangible assets is not very large and little accounted for, however Kazakhstan is a significant market and there is a prospect of growth in investment attractiveness.
It was noted that intellectual property is, above all, a property that, like any other property that should be protected. In this regard, Mr. Bolotov focused on the so-called “right to prohibit”, which means that after the registration of, for example, trademarks, the right owner has the right to prohibit the use of his trademark. Copyright and related rights were also discussed and a list of Kazakh laws regulating intellectual property issues was provided.
At the end of the webinar Yuri Bolotov answered students’ questions.
