Senate approved a draft law on suppression of false trademarks in CIS

On 8 June 2023, the Senate approved a draft law on ratification of the Agreement on cooperation of the CIS member states in preventing and suppressing the use of false trademarks and geographical indications Zakon.kz reported.

The document aims to ratify the Agreement on cooperation of the CIS member states in preventing and suppressing the use of false trademarks and geographical indications. The agreement was signed at the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government on May 28 2021 in order to:

– exchange of information on established facts of production and sale of goods bearing false trademarks and geographical indications, attempts to export or import such goods;

– conduct joint scientific research in the field of industrial property, seminars and conferences;

– exchange of relevant methodological and special literature;

– training of staff and professional development in the field of protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights;

– joint planning and implementation of measures to detect, suppress and prevent production and sale of goods bearing false trademarks and geographical indications, including their export or import.

The Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan underline that adoption of the law allows the competent authorities of the CIS member states to jointly prevent, detect and suppress the production and sale of goods with false trademarks and geographical indications, as well as to prevent the circulation of such goods across state borders of the CIS member states.

The Interstate Council for Legal Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property will be in charge of coordinating cooperation between the parties in the framework of the agreement.
